Is grain free food good for dogs?

There are a lot of dog and cat foods sold as grain-free with marketing suggesting that feeding no grains is healthier. This is not true and can, in fact, cause illness for some dogs and cats. There is no medical or physiologic basis to feed dogs or cats a grain-free diet.May 5, 2021

Is grain free dog food better or worse?

Despite the benefits for some dogs, there are downsides to feeding a grain-free dog food. Many people assume grain free means low carb, but that's not the case. In fact, some dog foods without grains are higher in alternative carbohydrate sources like potatoes and peas. This could result in unintentional weight gain.

Why do vets not recommend grain free?

According to a warning from the Food and Drug Administration released last week, grain-free food might be giving dogs a life-threatening heart problem called dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM. The science is still preliminary, and it's based on a potential association between diet and heart disease in fewer than 600 dogs.Jul 2, 2019

Reviews From our Customers
Customer says:
This is the only food one of my cats can eat. He has a very sensitive stomach and is able to eat this safely, most of the time. I order online since I have to have this particular food.
Customer says:
Our cat has entered her senior years and has always been a picky eater. I'm sure this is a great product for most pet owners but our little lady said she'd prefer something else.
Customer says:
My cat was diagnosed with an inflamed GI tract and we've been using this turkey/potato flavor very successfully for 4+ months without issue! I was prescribed a Science Diet Pre/Probiotic cat food by the vet, but didn't want to spend 4$ a day since her GI issues aren't constant- spending about $1.50 a day and subscribing for monthly shipments worked for us!! While I'm aware this food is intended for cats with allergy issues, the added fiber due to whole potatoes & carrots (unlike dried or powdered veggies I found in similar cat foods) seems to benefit her! HOWEVER, I typically have to pick up a week's worth of cans between monthly Amazon shipments at a nearby Petco and I didn't realize that these cans seemed MUCH older than the cans we've been getting through Amazon. The older Petco cans had a lot less moisture/gravy in them and lead to my cat being constipated and irritable until she had a few days worth of the newer Amazon cans. I'd suggest y'all check the dates of store-bought cans against Amazon cans before buying them- I'll probably be ordering my 7 extra cans on Amazon from now on!
Customer says:
I didn’t taste it because that would be weird, but I have it as a 5 star taste rating because my cat licks his own butt regularly and seems to enjoy that less than this mashup in a can.
Customer says:
My 23 year old cat has developed the habit of either A: licking the gravy from canned food, and leaving the morsels, or B: licking the fat from pate, and leaving the rest. He loves his dry food, but has to swallow small pieces whole and so doesn't eat as much as he used to, and it just doesn't seem like an enjoyable meal time experience. His 18yo "wife" passed 2 weeks ago, and she used to finish everything he left behind. Now, I'm not paying for just the gravy..... I took a chance, trying to "think like my cat" and ordered a case of this Turkey and Potato Entree, thinking if there's no separated gravy/fat/whatever is in the cheap food, he can't only eat the gravy. I really like the real ingredient list, and that there is no grain and things he doesn't need. My cat eats Every Last Little Possible Dot Of A Morsel of this food. He likes it so much, and the ingredients look so good (and honestly the cat food looks good too, you can see the veggies), that YES, I TASTED IT. (It's actually tasty). I've never had the urge to taste cat food, and my kitty gives it 4 thumbs up, so I concur.. The first few days I only put down a spoonful at a time for him, and he would walk away and return several times before licking the plate clean. Then he ate 1/4 can at a time. We're on our 4th can, and he wakes me up demanding I put down 1/2 a can before I even think about coffee. I just discovered Blue Buffalo (he's also in love with the moist salmon treats), and unfortunately the price has quadrupled since I bought this case. If I had known, I'd have bought 4. But I'll be feeding my kitty nothing but Blue Buffalo moist food from this day on (we may even try the dry food, but he's picky and loves the size of IAMS). Thanks Amazon for the random low price, even if it was just long enough to rock my kitty's world. We'll be on the lookout for another deal for sure.
Customer says:
I think this is probably a good product, it is just that none of my cats like it. It is duck flavored, so it may be too rich for them. When I scoop the product out of the can, it is kind of a gelatinous "rubbery" quality. It is not really rubbery, but it bends when scooping and doesn't break up like other types of food. You have to really mash it up to get it to break apart. It is pretty funny that this post asks about the flavor as I would never try the cat food myself!
